Lacoste is a popular French apparel company which was founded in 1933. It is well-known for selling high quality clothing, footwear, perfume, leather goods, watches, eye wear and of course, the very much noted tennis shirts. </p>
<p>Sixty five percent of the company is owned by the Lacoste family and 35% belongs to the Devanlay family. Proctor and Gamble holds its license for the fragrance line. In some countries like the United States and Spain, Lacoste earned the reputation of being preppy. </p>

During the 1927 US Open championship, where in he won, Lacoste wore a short-sleeved shirt that is made out of an exclusive light-knitted fabric called jersey petit pique. He was the one who created this shirt which has become a famous piece of apparel throughout the world.</p>
<p>During the Davis Cup in 1923, Rene Lacoste was given the nickname The Alligator by the American press because of a bet made about an alligator skin suitcase.</p>
<p>The American press nicknamed Lacoste <i>the alligator</i> during the 1923 Davis Cup because of the bet made about an alligator-skin suitcase. Due to his tenacious manner in the tennis court, the nickname stuck with him until Robert Georges, one of his friends, drew him a crocodile which was embroidered on the blazer he wore on the courts. </p>
