During the Davis Cup in 1923, Rene Lacoste was given the nickname The Alligator by the American press because of a bet made about an alligator skin suitcase.

The American press nicknamed Lacoste the alligator during the 1923 Davis Cup because of the bet made about an alligator-skin suitcase. Due to his tenacious manner in the tennis court, the nickname stuck with him until Robert Georges, one of his friends, drew him a crocodile which was embroidered on the blazer he wore on the courts.
